Earthwise helps make plant selection easy

The sophistication of gardeners in Delta could be a sign of the success of the green movement, the outgrowth of many years of consistent awareness-building, or just that we are lucky to have great growing weather most of the time.

Whatever it is, if you are interested in learning more about easy to grow and beautiful plants for your garden, you are not alone.

The Earthwise Society has nearly 15 years of experience teaching about ecological gardening. This spring, the new Easy Plants For Earthwise Gardens class will guide students through an entire growing season of the Earthwise Garden, de-mystifying plant placement, identification and how to use plant knowledge to put together a garden that works with its natural conditions for greater health and easier maintenance.

"The course is plant identification with an eco-twist," says Earthwise executive director Patricia Fleming.

"It focuses on learning about plant ecosystems and garden uses rather than memorizing Latin names. Each week, we will talk about a different ecological theme represented at the Earthwise Garden, from Coastal B.C. native plants to heirloom plants that have helped to shape our culture."

The course will run on alternating Sundays starting April 11. It will follow a casual but informative format, taking advantage of seasonal plant development in the one-acre demonstration garden, supported by the extensive knowledge and resources of horticulturalist and instructor Jennifer Ryan.

Students may register for seven spring (April 11 to June 27), seven summer/fall (July 11 to Oct. 3) or all 14 classes. The cost is $175 for seven or $300 for all 14. Register by Monday, April 5. Call 604-946-9828 or e-mail info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

The Boundary Bay Earthwise Garden, at 6400-3rd Ave., Tsawwassen, is open to the public seven days a week.
