If you're in the mood for some barbecued salmon on sunday, then ladner harbour park is the place to be.

The Tsawwassen Shrine Club will be holding its 42nd annual salmon barbecue from noon to 5:30 p.m. - or until the supply of salmon runs out.

"We can feed up to 2,000 people," says club treasurer Michael Cruise.

He says last year's barbecue went well and had good weather with around 1,700 people coming for a bite to eat.

Cruise notes the club buys 2,200 pounds of salmon for the annual event.

He attributes some of the event's longevity to the fact the club tries to keep prices affordable.

"We keep the prices down. It's only $10. Where can you get salmon barbecue for $10? We try to make it a family affair," he says, adding it costs $5 for kids 12 and under to enjoy the meal.

The barbecue consists of a generous portion of salmon, coleslaw, French fries, a bun with butter, coffee or juice. Pop is available at an extra cost.

Cruise says the event is also a way to say thanks to the Delta community for supporting Shriner activities.

Proceeds from the barbecue support Delta Hospital and the Shriner Care Cruiser Program for kids. The program provides a fleet of coaches to transport children to various hospitals in B.C.

Each coach is modified to comfortably transport physically challenged children and their family members. The overall annual cost of the program is more than $1.5 million but there is no cost to the patient or government.

Locally the club committed $75,000 to a pediatrics room at Delta Hospital and has contributed over $275,000 to community projects over the last 41 years.

The North American Shriners also support and maintain 22 hospitals for the benefit of physically challenged children. The nearest hospitals to the Lower Mainland are in Spokane and Portland.

Tickets will be available at the entrance to Ladner Harbour Park on Sunday.
