Tiller's Folly to headline gala

Tiller's Folly, a band steeped in the Celtic and Canadian tradition of folk music, is joining the Delta Police - Pipe Band, that is.

The group will headline the pipe band's third annual Celtic Gala, to be held on Oct. 29 at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen.

The 7:30 p.m. concert promises a variety of Celtic music from Tiller's Folly, the Delta Police Pipe Band, Clarion Creations Highland Dancers and the Delta Community Choir, with its youth choir, Tapestry.

It is not the first time Tiller's Folly has been involved with the police.

The group was commissioned to write a song by the village of Kinlochbervie, Scotland, to commemorate their local hero, Robert McBeath, VC.

After the First World War, McBeath immigrated to Canada and was a serving member of the Vancouver police department when he was fatally shot while making an arrest.

The concert is a fundraiser for the internationally acclaimed Delta Police Pipe Band, which has many national and international military tattoos to its credit, as well as standing invitations to tattoos in Russia, Scandinavia, Europe and Australia.

Its scheduled overseas trip for 2011 is to the prestigious Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo in England in May.

This invitation is particularly pleasing as it is the band's 40th anniversary. Travel expenses for the band's 50 members who will be participating are paid for by the band and the individual members.

On arrival in the host country, it is usual that all expenses are met by the host.

At the Celtic Gala, the audience can expect an interaction between the various acts and specialty items from elements within the pipe band.

The staccato Drum Cadence has become an audience favourite and Dueling Bagpipes will feature piper David All on the traditional pipes and piper Zhongxi Wu on the Chinese Suona, a wind instrument with similar characteristics to bagpipes, but without the bag.

Tickets for the concert are $25 and available locally at Grapes-4-U in Ladner and My Party Rentals in Tsawwassen.

Tickets may also be purchased through www.ticketweb.ca or ordered by phone at 604-940-5040.
