Urban food gardens are a very hot trend

The average Canadian meal travels 2,400 kilometres from soil to plate, so reducing food mileage is beneficial to the environment and individual health.

Delta's Earthwise Society suggests creating urban food gardens to help address the issue. Not only are they the hottest trend in urban sustainability, they also address concerns about urban food security.

Earthwise is sharing its knowledge about growing sustainable food in the city through a workshop series. The Food Gardens at Home series will take students through the basics of organic gardening and will provide key knowledge on planning and planting home gardens.

The workshops will be held at the Boundary Bay Earthwise Garden, 6400-3rd Ave., on Saturdays, April 17 and 24, from noon to 1 p.m., and Sunday, May 2 from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $20 per workshop. Registration is required by contacting 604-946-9828 or info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.
