Ladner's Dani-Rose Coates is having fun playing a "bad guy" role in Exit 22 Productions' rendition of Treasure Island at Capilano University.

Her character, Liz Killigrew, is a female pirate who takes and does what she wants, Coates explains.

"She's one of the bad guys. She's not a good guy at all."

It's a role that Coates is enjoying.

"I think it's completely the opposite of my personality. It's a lot of fun. It's tapping into a different side of myself that I'm not usually used to exploring and I'm really enjoying it."

The production of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic, directed by Des Price, includes a female Jim Hawkins, a bevy of female pirates, sword fights galore, treachery and treasure, according to a press release.

Coates, who's in the musical theatre program at Capilano, says her dance experience is really beneficial for the fight choreography required for her role in the play.

The Delta Secondary grad, who was involved in theatre in high school, says she has supportive family, friends and teachers who encouraged her to take the program at Capilano. She plans on pursuing theatre after university.
