The Tsawwassen Sun Festival returns this weekend, but does so with a musical twist.

The annual long weekend celebration will continue to feature its many popular attractions, including the colourful parade, but will add a music festival component this year.

"We are kicking things off this year and setting the bar high," says Dave McIlroy, artistic director and executive producer of the first annual SunFest Music Festival. "We will have eight venues, 30 acts and over 70 musicians participating."

Through the sponsorship of the Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen, the festival was able to hire musicians representing many genres, from hip-hop to classical to jazz.

The music fest gets underway on Friday evening and carries on through the weekend, wrapping up on Monday. Venues include the Tsawwassen Legion, Town Centre Mall, Earthwise Garden and skateboard park.

"Our goal was to bring official venues for music into the town centre where people can easily walk from one venue to the next over the course of an afternoon," says McIlroy. "These will be identified with large colourful banners and sandwich boards."

The Sun Festival won't be all music, however, as many other activities are planned throughout the weekend.

The parade, which will make its way along 56th Street to Winskill Park Monday morning, is always a crowd favourite.

Winskill Park will host activities throughout the weekend, including a midway, marketplace slo-pitch tourney and pancake breakfast, while the South Delta Recreation Centre area will be home to the antique fair, skateboard competition and fireworks display.
