Tsawwassen author Peter Vassilopoulos has taken a little bit of a different approach for his latest boating book.

Vassilopoulos, who has a series of cruising guides to his credit, recently released OOPS! Boating’s Close Encounters and Other Awkward Moments.

“There’s supposed to be an element of entertainment in the whole thing,” he says.

The longtime boater drew on his personal experiences for the book and notes it also touches on a number of serious boating situations to be avoided.

It deals with decisions that had to be made to avoid dangerous and troublesome passages, foggy conditions, shallow waterways, anchoring and falling overboard, he explains.

Dealing with other vessels in the fog is an important factor on the coast, he notes.

“If you don’t have radar and all the right equipment, you don’t know what’s going on. You’ve got to use your brains and figure out what could happen,” he says.

The book also includes many black and white photos and illustrations showing some of the situations that are described, he notes.

OOPS! is available from Albany Books in Tsawwassen.
