Memorial Park will be turned into a fairgrounds this weekend as Ladner Pioneer May Days returns.

Memorial Park will be the place to be this weekend as Ladner Pioneer May Days returns for another year of fun and excitement.

The historic annual fair, which dates back all the way to 1896, has festivities beginning Friday evening and carrying on through Saturday and Sunday.

“May Days has been around for so long. Everybody that does something for May Days and helps out with May Days has stepped up again this year,” says event chairperson Jennifer Scott. “People help out and get the job done.”

The fun includes carnival rides, a petting zoo, paddle boats, pony rides, gold panning with Yukon Dan, a Delta Gymnastics Tumbling Tent, roving entertainment from Stories on Wheels and more. There will be live music acts on the main stage Saturday and Sunday as well as a May Days market.

May Days has an Under the Sea theme this year, which was decided via voting on Facebook.

Sunday’s parade takes place at noon. The traditional May Pole Dance and crowning of the May Queen ceremony also takes place Sunday following the parade.

May Days will have a variety of food trucks on site at the park as well as a beer garden.

A new addition to the event this year is Metro Vancouver’s Water Wagon, a refillable water bottle station, Scott notes.

She adds ElectroRecycle will be at the fair, accepting small appliances and other items for recycling.

Scott says May Days is always looking for volunteers to help. The event’s web page can be found at www.ladnermaydays.com.
