Beryl Matthewson of Ladner will be part of the Canadian Federation of University Women delegation at an international conference in South Africa next week.

Matthewson will attend the Graduate Women International’s 32nd triennial conference in Cape Town Aug. 24 to 26. Graduate Women International is a worldwide, non-governmental organization of women graduates that advocates for women’s rights, equality and empowerment through access to quality secondary and tertiary education.

This year’s triennial is organized around three central themes: education, gender and human rights. The conference will bring together affiliates from countries all over the world to foster dialogue and exchange ideas on these themes.

This subject is particularly important as the status of women around the world remains insecure, and the education of girls continues to be neglected. The conference provides a crucial opportunity to ensure the best ideas and initiatives are being supported, and that women and girls are being empowered around the world.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to meet women from around the world, discuss matters of common concern, and bring back information and new perspectives on women and girls education to our club and community,” said Matthewson, president of the Canadian Federation of University Women South Delta.

The Canadian Federation of University Women is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded organization with over 100 clubs located in every province across Canada. Since its founding in 1919, it has been working to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace.

The South Delta club awards scholarships and bursaries annually to local women pursuing post-secondary education, participates in literacy programs in elementary schools, hosts fundraising events, was instrumental in hiring a Delta social planner and is spearheading a plan for a local transition shelter.
