Installation of the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club's new all-season green was expected to be finished yesterday afternoon.

The club is holding an event tomorrow for new members to come and try out the sport and the new green.

"People can bowl on the green for the first time," says club president Dana Cullis.

The event goes from 10 a.m. to noon. In the afternoon the club, which has around 100 members, is having a social.

The new green marks an historic change for the club. Cullis notes the previous green was used for approximately 100 years.

"Whoever did it, installed it well," she says. Benefits of the new all-season green include improved safety measures, an extra lane, less maintenance and year-round play. It also makes it easier to bowl, notes Cullis.

"You don't have to throw the bowl as hard. It extends the number of years you can bowl."

The project cost around $500,000, which the club began fundraising for a decade ago, says project manager Pete Cullis.

Installation work started the first week of April.

The club will host an "official" open house, which local dignitaries are being invited to, on Saturday, July 7.

The Ladner Lawn Bowling Club is located at 5128-47th Ave. For more information call 6049466722.

New members are always welcome.
