A sad event occurred at the Tunnel Town Curling Club during senior men's curling when a member suffered a heart attack.
Another member, trained in first aid, seeing the member collapse, immediately started chest compressions while the club manager went in search of the defibrillator, which was to have been located between the hockey arena and the curling club but had been moved to the front office in the South Delta Recreation Centre.
Approximately five minutes later she returned with the defibrillator and it was hooked up to the heart attack victim.
Approximately 10 minutes after the heart attack, the fire truck arrived and took over.
The ambulance arrived approximately five minutes after the fire truck and paramedics took over from the firefighters.
The member never recovered. It was deemed a massive heart failure.
As a senior men's curler, I always believed the defibrillator was located in the curling rink. I'm not saying, if it had been, the outcome would have been different, but what I am saying is another defibrillator should be acquired immediately for the curling club.
There should be no foot dragging by the municipality. This should be done before another curler suffers heart failure where immediate hook-up to a defibrillator would make the difference between life and death.
