The Delta Hospital Foundation's 12th annual Delta Health Golf Classic saw golfers tee it up earlier this month at Kings Links by the Sea in support of our local hospital.
The final cheque was presented to the foundation by the presenting sponsor, the Delta Fire Fighters Charitable Society, for over $142,000, surpassing the initial goal of $125,000.
All monies raised will go towards the Delta Hospital Foundation's Cancer Care Fund, a newly designated fund dedicated to early detection of cancer and the purchase of diagnostic equipment.
"We are extremely pleased with the amount of support the golf tournament received this year," said Lois Wilkinson, chair of the Delta Hospital Foundation board. "The money raised at the tournament will benefit cancer care programs at Delta Hospital by bringing much needed diagnostic equipment to our community."
The Cancer Care Fund received its first two corporate gifts at the event with $10,000 donated from RBC and $5,000 from the Wheaton Group.
Since 2000, the Delta Health Golf Classic has raised over $1 million for Delta Hospital, equipment, programs and services. The always sold-out event attracts 144 golfers and has repeatedly won best tournament throughout the community.
"We appreciate all of the support and time our dedicated sponsors provide; year after year they help make this tournament a success," said Bruce Fougner, Delta Health Golf Classic chair. "It is great to see everyone engaged, having fun and raising money for our hospital."
Presented by the Delta Fire Fighters Charitable Society, the tournament ended with dinner emceed by Robb Lucy, former producer for CBC, and was capped off by a live auction conducted by Coun. Ian Paton. The most popular auction item was a four-day fishing adventure at Duncanby Lodge and Marina worth over $7,500.
