Fashion designer David Dixon has come a long way from making outfits for his Barbie doll out of coloured tissues.

The Toronto style-maker's brand is sold around the world, counting fans among celebs like Pamela Anderson, Meg Ryan and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

But three decades after he first dressed Barbie, he is once again focusing his attention on his childhood muse.

In honour of the 50th birthday of Barbie, her maker, Mattel, selected David Dixon and a handful of other Canadian lines to create real-world, Barbie-inspired items.

The result is a range of products including everything from clothing -- Dixon's line is available at the Bay in September -- and shoes to perfume and pillows.

In other words, playing Barbie can now make you look a little trendier, smell a little nicer and walk a little taller. Not to mention spruce up your home.

Dixon's new line of clothing is decidedly modern, but he says he drew inspiration from Barbie's flirty past, including her signature pink and the zebra print from the 1959 doll's bathing suit.

"I took elements that are distinctive to Barbie, and again made them into contemporary clothing," David says.

The result is a wearable, fun collection packed with closet-enhancing staples like the work-appropriate, figure-skimming houndstooth dress ($295) that will take you from the office to cocktails after work.

The line also includes stylish must-haves such as the empire-waisted wool coat in a vivid shade of pink ($495), an easy way to stand out on grey fall days.

But that's not all.

In addition to slipping into Dixon's fashionable attire, Barbie fans will also be able to lounge on a Barbie-inspired pillow or couch designed by his brother, celebrity decorator Glenn Dixon. This line is set to launch in January at stores still to be determined.

Fans can also moisturize with Barbie by Cake's yummy-scented hand cream; dance all night in Barbie-inspired party pumps by Town Shoes and finally, bling up with Barbie-esque accessories by Foxy Originals.

"It's all about bringing nostalgia to the consumer," says Carmen Martinez, a spokeswoman for Mattel. "We are really expecting to reconnect to every woman who grew up loving Barbie."

Nostalgia played a big part in the creation of a special bath and body line for Cake Beauty, says spokesperson Allison Daisley. The line includes body wash and hand cream among other items, all with a special vanilla cupcake-like Barbie scent.

"We had so much fun with this collection," says Daisley. "It's cheerful. It takes people away for a second."

Glenn Dixon says he can remember designing his Barbies' homes using items like boxes and Popsicle sticks.

"What's ironic is, the things we dreamt about and used Barbie for, came to fruition (for us) as adults," Glenn says. "She actually gave the freedom to imagine what your life could be."
