A group of local youngsters is collecting donations to help bring some snuggly Christmas cheer to kids in need this year.

Molly Millward, 9, saw what her cousin started in Surrey two years ago with the Christmas Pyjama Drive and decided she wanted to use the same idea to help kids in Delta.

Millward started the PJ Crew at Port Guichon Elementary, where she's in Grade 4. The group is aiming to collect 500 pairs of new children's pyjamas to donate to Deltassist for its Christmas hamper program.

Mom Lesley Millward said her daughter recognized that many local kids aren't as lucky as some and wanted to help.

She said her daughter said she wanted to collect the pyjamas "because children in our community are in need of pyjamas. And in our house it is a tradition that we always get pyjamas on Christmas Eve, even when my mom was a kid she got PJs on Christmas Eve. I would be sad if we weren't able to do this, so I want to do it for other kids."

Donations are being accepted until Dec. 8.

New children's pyjamas can be dropped off at Port Guichon Elementary, Urban Rack, Buggy Babies Fitness, Buttercups Children's Boutique in Ladner and Brown's Socialhouse in Tsawwassen. Brown's is also holding a special promotion. Anyone who brings a donation to the restaurant on Dec. 9 will receive 50 per cent off their food bill.
