The Festival of Dangerous Ideas is coming to Delta Secondary.
Social studies teachers Marie Bonardelli, Dana Huff and Pam Mann are teaming up to create an educational opportunity that causes students to think critically and discuss their ideas.
The inspiration for the festival came from Bonardelli, who spent the past six years in Australia where this was one of her favourite events to attend.
“I always found it a really stimulating experience to think of questions,” she said.
Bonardelli is all about idea-based learning and believes the festival encourages the notion that all ideas can be dangerous in some ways, adding that her own students are teaching her a thing or two.
Students Nathan Pannel and Keon Senez have enjoyed the process of the project. They like the aspect of being able to choose what they’re learning about.
“If something is more teacher-led, you have less opportunity to find what you want to learn about,” Senez said.
Both students would be excited if more projects were led in this kind of format, and feel this is a step to more freedom of learning at DSS.
The festival takes place from March 12 to 16 in the school library. The public is invited to take part during a special session on Tuesday, March 13 at 6 p.m.
