A fun side to Mother Nature’s big freeze resulted in a ready made skating rink in Ladner recently.

Local resident Jim Provost contacted the Optimist relating a real slice of winter in Canada that he came across.

“I dropped in to visit my son and his in-laws when they bring to my attention, Hockey Night In Ladner on an outdoor rink under the head lamps of parked cars on 48th Avenue,” said Provost. “Mother Nature had frozen lying water on an empty lot. No hoses, no ice plant, no Zamboni — just Mother Nature and the spontaneous actions of a few local hockey enthusiasts. I had to blink twice to make sure I wasn't watching a TV ad.”

He said he figured there were 10 to a dozen folks, both young and old, skating and playing some pick-up hockey.

He said he saw others trying out the instant skating rink again last week.

“It’s certainly something you don’t see every day, especially out here,” he added. “This brings back memories of days long ago when I was growing up on the prairies and skating on frozen ponds. Some of the best games of shinny I every played. We may grumble about the 'deep freeze' but there are a few who are experiencing the up side of the freeze and keeping warm playing our national game — hockey!”
