Delta Gymnastics celebrated Participaction Canada’s Longest Day of Play with a recent event and unveiled Delta’s first Playbox, which is now available to the public outside the Delta Sport Development Centre during operating hours.

Delta Gymnastics Society, in conjunction with the Delta Child and Youth Committee, has introduced the first Playbox in Delta.

A Playbox is a physical box filled with sports equipment, toys and game ideas to facilitate active play and physical activity among families.

There is growing concern across North America about the lack of childhood activity leading to childhood obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes.

The Playbox has been developed as part of the LIVE 5-2-1-0 initiative that provides simple advice for families on how to lead a healthy lifestyle. LIVE 5-2-1-0 is four easy messages for daily eating and activity habits that children and their families can put into practice:

Enjoy 5 fruits and vegetables;

No more than 2 hours of out of school screen time outside of school work;

At least 1 hour of physical activity; and

0 sugar sweetened drinks.

The Delta Gymnastics Society Playbox will provide equipment and game ideas for parents and children to use outside of the Delta Gymnastics facility during its hours of operation.

Delta Gymnastics Society and the Delta Child and Youth Committee encourage other groups to consider providing Playboxes in their neighbourhoods.
