New Consumer Code will provide better protection

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announced this week the launch of consultations on a comprehensive code to better protect Canadian consumers.

"As outlined in the recent speech from the throne, our government is committed to taking action on behalf of Canadian consumers," said Findlay, the minister of national revenue. "These consultations will help create a robust Consumer Code and help ensure concrete protection for Canadian families."

Canadians will have the ability to comment during these Consumer Code consultations for the next 12 weeks. This feedback will be used as the basis for roundtable discussions across Canada in 2014.

The Consumer Code consultation paper being released makes specific reference to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and asks what additional tools and authorities the agency may need in order to effectively carry out its supervisory role.

Comments on the attached draft consultation paper can be submitted to the Department of Finance at code.consult@fin.gc.ca. The closing date for comments is Feb. 28, 2014.
