Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton were on hand Tuesday for a ceremony to mark the opening of the 80th Street off-ramp on Highway 99.

The 80th Street off-ramp officially opened earlier this week.

The off-ramp allows drivers on Highway 99 southbound to access Ladner Trunk Road at 80th Street.

It will improve traffic flow for families and commercial drivers, said Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton during a ceremony Tuesday morning.

"The new off-ramp ... will improve traffic flow and give truckers direct access to the Boundary Bay Airport and its industrial park," Hamilton said.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said the off-ramp is a vital component to the development of land at the airport.

A lengthened acceleration lane under the Ladner Trunk Road overpass, set to improve safety for motorists merging onto Highway 99 northbound, is scheduled for completion by the fall.

Ladner Trunk Road will also be widened to four lanes through the Hornby Drive intersection to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The province and Delta each contributed 50 per cent to the $10-million project for improvements to the Highway 99 corridor.
