Dear Editor:
Every now and then, the crème de la crème of society appears and displays its character in the most unexpected ways.
The above description has seldom applied to our political world: our democracy with the election process makes contests and the results, at times, difficult to accept.
But we all agree, win or lose, the majority have spoken. With it are emotions that range from glee to despair, all part of human reaction caused by sincerity, dedication, the will to serve, an honest effort to assist, to add quality to our way of life in our community.
Having said that, a recent city election was a rare display of what this letter is all about. We all witnessed a long-term councillor lose out. That is not the story - the ultimate outcome has to be how he reacted to his loss.
Was he vindictive? Did he moan or groan? Yes, he was disappointed, that is expected. However, rarely seen in the past was his display at his last council meeting: after a brief review of progress in our city, adding his appreciation and the privilege to be part of it all, he congratulated his replacement and wished him well.
He let it be known that he would continue to be available to assist in any capacity that would benefit the citizens of New Westminster.
He appeared at the last council meeting and led his former colleagues in singing Christmas carols.
I think Mr. Cal Donnelly's performance is worthy and should be passed on as an object lesson to all who take part in our democratic process.
Ray Pigeau, New Westminster
