Delta police and ICBC teamed up this week to focus on educating residents on pedestrian safety.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, police officers and volunteers were on hand at several intersections to provide education, informational pamphlets and high visibility reflective clothing supplied by ICBC.

In South Delta, officers and volunteers were set up at Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive in Ladner and at 56th Street and 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen.

"The initiative will focus on both pedestrian safety and driver awareness at intersections with the overall goal of reducing accidents and fatalities in and around intersections and crosswalks," said Delta police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan.

Officers and volunteers were providing a number of tips for both pedestrians and drivers.

Tips for pedestrians:

. Always be cautious and pay attention to traffic. Drivers may not always stop or obey traffic signals.

. Wear bright or lightcoloured clothing. When the sun starts going down or in bad weather, wear reflective material on your clothes (sleeves, shoes, jacket or hat).

. Focus your full attention on what's happening on the roadway. Removing headphones and putting away cell phones, or other gadgets, can make a difference.

Tips for drivers:

. Always yield to pedestrians at intersections.

. Be alert and scan left and right for pedestrians when you approach any intersection.

. Drive defensively. Be prepared for poor driving conditions, or unsafe actions of other drivers, pedestrians or cyclists.
