The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club was showing off its latest project - a new mobile kitchen - at Delta municipal hall earlier this week.
The club unveiled the Streetside Community Kitchen for Delta council and staff Monday afternoon. The fully equipped kitchen is totally portable as it is contained in a 26-foot trailer.
Club member Roger Lasell, who chaired the committee that spearheaded the project, said the group had been in discussions with the Corporation of Delta about how a mobile kitchen could help during an emergency. Two-and-a-half years later, those discussions led to the development of the Streetside Community Kitchen.
The full-service kitchen runs on a diesel genera-tor and can operate for 28 hours without refueling. It includes everything club members would need to feed a crowd: two deep fryers, a grill, charbroiler, stovetop and coffee maker.
Lasell said the club has an agreement in principle with Delta to provide food to first responders and members of the public during an emergency.
Lasell said the kitchen would also be available at upcoming community events. Groups or service clubs wishing to discuss partnering/fundraising arrangements should contact streetsidecommunitykitchen@gmail.com.
