Members of the Kwantlen First Nation, along with their friends, families, and invited guests from around Langley, gathered to welcome the return of the salmon on Friday.

The Kwantlen held a feast with dancing and drumming as part of the first salmon ceremony at the reserve on MacMillan Island.

Dozens of people, from elders to the very young, took part in drumming and singing. Local dancers were joined by those from Alberta and Saskatchewan, displaying their skills in a number of traditional dances.

The first salmon ceremony is an annual event to honour the ancestors of the Kwantlen and make the traditional offering to the Fraser River.
