A team of Grade 5 students from Sacred Heart School competed at the Odyssey of the Mind World Final in Iowa last month.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international education program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students. In teams, the students are challenged to apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting an interpretation of a literary classic.
The Sacred Heart team was competing along with 50 others in their division in the classics problem. Their challenge was to interpret the famous "to be or not to be" soliloquy from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The team's entry came in 26th place.
Overall, there were more than 800 teams competing at this year's event, including ones from China, South Korea, India and Poland.
The team has been fundraising over the past several weeks to cover the costs of the trip and has one final event planned for this weekend.
The school has partnered with Richport Ford Lincoln in its Drive one 4 UR School Program, which will be at Sacred Heart on Sunday from 12: 30 to 4 p.m.
The dealership will bring 10 new Ford vehicles to be taken out on free test drives and Ford will pay Sacred Heart $20 for each test drive (one per household) to a maximum of $6,000.
Cobs Bread will also be there with a hot dog barbecue, baked goods and drinks by donation.
As well, the school will be accepting donations of recyclable bottles and cans.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Odyssey of the Mind program at Sacred Heart.
