Delta Gymnastics raised some money and had some fun with a special event last weekend.

On Sunday, the group hosted the Sports Showdown Challenge, which pitted teams against one another to not only raise money for Delta Gymnastics' new home, which is currently under construction in Ladner and slated for completion this spring, but to complete eight physical challenges set up throughout the current facility in Tsawwassen.

"It was awesome," said Delta Gymnastics executive director Mark Friesen.

Eight teams participated, including one each from the Delta fire and police departments, the Corporation of Delta, Delta Gymnastics, Delta school board and others from the community.

The challenges ranged from the physically strenuous to those that required simple co-ordination to some that were just plain fun.

The Delta Gymnastics team garnered the most points, however, the hosts declared the second place Delta police team the day's winner. The Delta fire department took third place.

So far, Friesen said, the event has raised more than $5,200, with pledges still trickling in.

It was part of Delta Gymnastics Kids 1st campaign that was launched last year to help raise money to help cover the remainder of the construction costs and outfit the new facility with equipment. So far, about $330,000 of the $850,000 needed has been raised.
