Frits de Vries Architects + Associates Ltd. is up for an AIBC Architectural Award its work on this Tsawwassen home.

A Tsawwassen home is one of the finalists list for a 2017 AIBC Architectural Award.

The two-storey, 2,335-square-foot beachfront home was designed by Vancouver-based firm Frits de Vries Architects + Associates Ltd.

“Everybody in our office loves that house and loves that design,” said de Vries.

The firm’s principal architect explained the house was designed to be accessible for aging in place and has a beautiful glass elevator to help with that scenario.

He said architect Sandi Wiley worked hard on that house to get the detailing perfect and the elevator, which also serves as a light shaft and brings in a lot of natural light, “was a bit of a project in itself.”

The house, which sits on a relatively narrow 35-foot wide lot and fronts Centennial Beach, was designed with an “efficient and open plan with a focus on ocean views, all the while affording considerable privacy within,” according to the architectural firm’s website.

“An exterior in natural stone, metal cladding, and porcelain tile echo the surrounding oceanfront textures of beach stone, driftwood and water,” it adds.

The Architectural Institute of British Columbia’s awards shine a spotlight on architectural excellence.

Winners are scheduled to be announced May 10.
