A Delta-based company that designs and builds airframe structures for some of the world's leading aircraft manufacturers is receiving a substantial research and development grant from the federal government.

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, on behalf of Industry Minister James Moore, was at Avcorp Industries Inc. on River Way Wednesday to announce a $4.4-million investment in the company's latest research project, developing new technologies in metal bonding and aircraft parts manufacturing.

The contribution, made through the Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI), will allow Avcorp, which also builds components for fighter jets, to realize greater market opportunities.

"This is great news for our region and for B.C. aerospace," said Findlay, the minister of national revenue. "By supporting Avcorp's advanced manufacturing R&D, the federal government is helping the company to grow its industry presence, partner with universities and expand its network of Canadian suppliers. That means jobs and economic opportunities for our community."

Avcorp's project to develop advancements in metalbonding technology will be used to manufacture new aircraft components such as structural panels, rudders and wing parts. This multiyear project will help the company realize a competitive advantage through costeffective advanced manufacturing, said Findlay. "Canada's aerospace industry directly employs 73,000 people in highskilled jobs and contributes more than $12 billion to the economy," said Moore in a statement. "By investing in Avcorp's advanced manufacturing project, we are helping to ensure that our aerospace industry remains a world leader."

SADI provides repayable contributions to support R&D projects in the aerospace, space, defence and security sectors. Since 2007, the federal government has invested $1.15 billion through SADI.
