Delta council has given preliminary approval to a Tim Hortons in East Ladner after the developer scaled back the hours of operation.

Another application to build a small Tim Hortons drive-thru restaurant in East Ladner received preliminary approval from Delta council Monday in order to send it to a public hearing.

A few weeks ago council decided to waive the six-month period for defeated development applications, allowing for another look at the proposal.

Southborough Investments has been trying to build the restaurant with a drive-thru on a vacant lot adjacent to the Otter Co-Op gas station on Ladner Trunk Road at 64th Street, however, the proximity of the drive-thru to homes and the hours of operation were sticking points for some council members.

The new proposal would see a higher sound attenuation fence between the site and residential properties and would see the proposed hours of operation reduced from 24 hours to 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.
The drive-thru lane would be just over seven metres from neighbouring homes.

On Monday, Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, concerned about idling cars, inquired about Delta’s drive-thru policy and distance from homes. Staff responded there’s no set number and that applications are considered on a site-by-site basis.

Delta is undergoing a comprehensive bylaw review that will include a policy on drive-thrus.
