Const. Leisa Schaefer, district liaison officer for the Tsawwassen Community Police Station, was at a Coffee with a Cop session at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner Wednesday morning.

The Delta Police Department continued its community outreach efforts in Ladner Wednesday with another Coffee with a Cop session at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre.

Const. Leisa Schaefer, district liaison officer for the Tsawwassen Community Police Station, was on hand to answer questions and provide information on a variety of topics, including senior safety, phone and Internet scams, pedestrian safety, Block Watch and general police department information.

One of the hot topics was scams and how people can protect themselves from being victimized.

“The only person that can protect you is yourself,” Schaefer shared. “Unfortunately the older generation is preyed upon a lot because they came from a very trusting generation, but anyone can be targeted.”

Schaefer said she has been targeted several times on her work cell phone from scam artists fishing for information as well as her home phone number.

“Don’t engage in anything. Don’t engage on your computer or on your phone,” she said.

“They have a number and a name and are hoping you will give them more.”

She encouraged those who have received these calls who feel uncertain to reach out to officers and volunteers who serve the community police stations (CoPS) in Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta.

“It’s OK to reach out for help… that’s what we are here for… to help,” she said. “There are lots of things going on in our community, so this is why we have these sessions so we can engage with the community, connect with them and answer questions.”
