Delta MP Carla Qualtrough and Surrey Centre MP Randeep Sarai are co-hosting a town hall meeting on climate change Monday.

The forum at L.A. Matheson Secondary, 9484-122nd St., Surrey, will be an opportunity for Delta and Surrey residents to provide their input on what should form Canada's climate action plan. MPs across the country are hosting similar meetings.

"We are transitioning Canada towards a stronger, more resilient, low-carbon economy - that also improves quality of life for Canadians. To do this, we will need to identify measures that governments can take to grow their economies and reduce emissions in the long term. We need help from Canadians like you," according to a government website.

Priority at the Aug. 29 meeting will be given to Delta and Surrey residents as far as the speaking order.

Speaking of climate change, B.C. Premier Christy Clark recently unveiled the province's plan to tackle it. Called the Climate Leadership Plan, the initiative's initial 21 action items include making electric vehicles more affordable and buildings more energy efficient.

Closer to home in Delta, the municipality has been working on reducing its corporate emissions footprint since 2007 through various initiatives. The Climate Change Initiative includes, among other actions, improving the energy efficiency of recreation centres and switching to cleaner burning fuels like bio diesel. A proposal will be put forward by civic staff to look at opportunities to build more electric car charging stations.

Monday's town hall meeting takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
