The Delta police unveiled a new crest last week commemorating the department's 125th anniversary.

The crest was released on Friday and all patrol officers will be sporting it by today.

The department also has plans to replace officers' badges and integrate the new crest onto business cards, department letterhead and marked police vehicles as older items are naturally replaced.

The design follows the basic pattern for Canadian municipal police badges.

It features the shield of the Corporation of Delta, the maple leaf and dogwood flower - which symbolize the department's service to Delta, Canada and B.C. - as well as the department's motto: honour, integrity, courage, trust.

The new crest integrates the colour green, which is also used in Delta's crest.

Delta police Chief Jim Cessford told the Delta police board last week that integrating the new crest is expected to cost about $100,000 over three years - $20,000 last year, $60,000 this year and another $20,000 in 2014.

However, he stressed that all the money is already in the department's budget.

"There is no new money required," Cessford said.
