A 20-year-old man is in police custody following an alleged stabbing and robbery at the Walmart in North Delta Saturday afternoon.

Delta police responded to the Walmart on 120th Street just after 12:30 p.m.

The initial investigation revealed that a loss prevention officer was attempting to apprehend a shoplifter when the suspected shoplifter stabbed him and fled on foot in a southerly direction from the store.

“In minutes, Delta police arrived on scene, established containment and deployed a K-9 unit,” said public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “Alert patrol officers observed a male loosely matching the description of the suspect in the 6900-block of 120th Street. Officers approached the male and took him into custody without incident.”

Brooks said the victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect, a male in his 20s of no fixed address, remains in custody. Police are recommending charges of robbery and breach of conditions.

“Fortunately Delta police were able to resolve this incident in a short period of time apprehending the suspect removing further risk to the public,” added Brooks.
