Parents chip in to reward boys for ‘playing better’

Coach Rich Zahn and players Rhys Saleken, Hillyard Carson and Matthew Payne present the cheque to Dalyce Wickett of the Delta Hospice Society.

The South Delta United boys U14 soccer team chose a unique way of giving back to the community and the Delta Hospice Society is fortunate to be the recipient.

This past season, the team took part in the Play Better program. It chose a goal of 140 completed passes per game and every time the team hit that target, the boys’ parents donated money to a charity of the boys’ choice.

The boys chose the Delta Hospice Society and recently presented the organization with a cheque for $767.

“We were very pleased with the outcome as the commitment to ‘playing better’ took the emphasis off of win at all cost and made learning to play the right way the main focus,” says coach Rich Zahn.

“It also helped introduce the boys to community awareness and maybe taught them a little about philanthropy.”

“Soccer is such a part of the fabric of our community,” says Delta Hospice Society executive director Nancy Macey.

“For the team to make a choice to give their hard earned funds to Delta Hospice says a lot about all the boys on this team.  A big thank you to everyone involved in making this decision.”

Many girls and boys are impacted by serious illness and loss in their families. Increasing awareness and donations like this help youth access supportive services when there is a need.
