Three recent events have prompted me to write. First, the media coverage about the coming out of NBA star Jason Collins. Secondly, a group of women friends discussing whether or not there is a need for a Gay volleyball league. Thirdly, on a recent visit to Steveston, a group of middle-aged patrons joking about a server's sexuality.

Head of the class

Each year, beginning in September, nominations are cast for Coach of the Year at the high school level. Don Herman has been coaching high school basketball for more than 30 years, and recently, in his most current posting as the head coach of the Maple Ridge Secondary senior girls team, the ever-smiling Herman recorded his 1,000th career win.

The Chilliwack Basketball Club, led by UFV men's basketball head assistant coach Kyle Graves, hosts a basketball camp for boys in Grades 5 and 6 May 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. and May 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $40.

Sam Freeman, a fifth year guard for the University of the Fraser Valley, was named the 2012-13 Male University Outstanding player by Basketball B.C. Freeman was honoured at the organizations' annual Hall of Fame and Awards Gala at the Langley Events Centre April 20.
