Contractor inadvertently pulls live gas line at Boundary Bay Road

A section of Boundary Bay Road won't reopen until later tonight.

A section of Boundary Bay Road has been shut down due to a gas leak this afternoon but municipal officials are assuring there’s no threat to public safety.

Delta CAO George Harvie said that around 2 p.m. a private contractor working in the area of 3rd Avenue and Boundary Bay Road inadvertently pulled a gas line that was unmarked and unknown. It turned out to be live. It took a while for Fortis to shut down the leak.

“During that time our crews did a very good job connecting with fire, engineering and police and we have shut down that traffic through that area. There is no threat to public safety and having the alternate road going in will ensure there is full and complete repairs without having to shut down natural gas services to the Boundary Bay residential area” he said.

Delta police spokesperson Sharlene Brooks said those heading in and out of the Boundary Bay neighbourhood will be diverted to a bypass route through the Centennial Beach parking lot and out former Centennial Parkway access. The bypass will remain in effect until 11 p.m.
