A local barn was destroyed after fire broke out Thursday night.

Fire crews were called to Loranda Stables and Kitty Kottage on 28th Avenue in Ladner just before 11:30 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the building was already fully engulfed in flames.

“Upon arrival, [the] Battalion Chief was approached by a neighbor who was concerned that there might be horses inside the barns,” fire Chief Dan Copeland said in a statement. “Crews quickly check areas of concern and determined that no animals were inside.”

The dozen or so horses and numerous cats had been safely rescued.

The roof collapsed leaving firefighters battling the flames in defensive mode from the exterior of the building.

Once the fire was knocked down, another crew was brought in a deal with hot spots.

“The callout crew could be on scene for most of the morning to ensure complete extinguishment,” Copeland said.

No word yet on a cause. One person was seen being given oxygen and assessed by paramedics but was not taken to hospital.

Fire investigators are on scene.
