UPDATE:

A 28-year-old man from Surrey is dead following a single-vehicle accident on Nordel Way in North Delta Tuesday afternoon.

Delta police responded to the accident in the 10500-block of Nordel Way just after 2 p.m.

“The vehicle, a 2002 green Toyota Echo, is believed to have been travelling in the far right lane (curb lane) westbound on Nordel Way before it left the roadway and struck the overhead sign post,” said Delta police public relations coordinator Sharlene Brooks, adding the driver was killed on impact. “Although the investigation into this collision is in its early stages, police can say with confidence that speed was one of the significant contributing factors.”

Following the accident, the overhead highway sign fell across the two westbound lanes of traffic near the approach to the Alex Fraser Bridge. Both lanes were closed to traffic until early Wednesday morning as police investigated and highway crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic was re-routed at 84th Avenue while the closure was in place.

Police have not released the man’s name.

“Police believe there were several motorists travelling in the area at the time of the collision. Although a passerby may not have witnessed the collision itself, information surrounding driving pattern of the vehicle involved prior to the collision would be important as well,” added Brooks.

Anyone who either witnessed the collision or has information about the driving pattern of the vehicle is asked to call Delta police at 604-946-4411 quoting file number: 16-25080 and ask to speak with Const. Lehbauer.

A driver died Tuesday after a single vehicle crash in the 10500-block of Nordel Way.

Delta police responded to the crash around 2 p.m. and found a vehicle had collided with the base portion of an overhead sign. The impact caused the sign to come down across the road.

“Sadly, the driver (the lone occupant of the vehicle) died at the scene,” police said in a press release.

Police noted westbound lanes on Nordel Way are currently shut down and traffic is being re-routed at 84th Avenue.

“The road closure will be in place for several hours while crews work to remove the overhead sign structure and investigators conduct the scene examination and investigation,” police said.

Police recommend motorists avoid the area.
