Should people in Delta be allowed to enjoy their joint outdoors in public?

The City of Delta certainly doesn’t think so, and is asking the province for a complete ban on the public consumption of all forms of cannabis.

The province has announced some policies when it comes to recreational pot, including adults over the age of 19 being able to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis in a public place, while smoking will be permitted in public spaces where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted.

Smoking won’t be permitted in places frequented by children including beaches, parks and playgrounds.

Local governments will be able to set additional restrictions, as they do now for tobacco use.

Three years ago, Delta council approved an amendment to the municipality's smoking bylaw to prohibit smoking cigarettes or vapes in all municipal parks and public open spaces. Cannabis would fall within that rule, but Delta wants the smoking of pot anywhere outdoors also prohibited. It would essentially make it the same as the consumption of alcohol in public.

Meanwhile, landlords and strata councils will be able to restrict or prohibit non-medical cannabis smoking and vaping at tenanted and strata properties.

Council will discuss a staff report on B.C.’s cannabis regulations on Monday.
