Legislature seeks input on improving health services

Editor:

Citizens of Delta South have another opportunity to weigh in on the provision of health services in Delta - and across B.C. The legislature's health committee is seeking written submissions asking how the provincial government can improve our healthcare system.

The challenges associated with an aging population and increasing healthcare costs have a real impact on South Delta. We have seen some of those costs transferred to seniors in long-term care facilities, including wheelchair fees. We have seen patients sent home early to free up beds, and unacceptably long waits at transition centres, where patients remain in limbo for weeks before being admitted to a long-term care facility.

The committee's report will focus on issues related to end-of-life care, the delivery of services through interdisciplinary teams, rural services and addiction recovery programs.

If you have suggestions for improvements in any of these areas, or if you would like more information, please visit the health committee website at www.leg.bc.ca/cmt/health or send a written submission to: Select Standing Committee on Health; Room 224, Parliament Buildings; Victoria, B.C., V8V 1X4.

The committee has asked that any suggestions include an explanation of anticipated benefits and a justification of related costs.

The deadline for submissions is Dec. 31.
