MLA encourages public to have say on transit

South Delta is notoriously underserved by public transit. Reaching a destination can mean dealing with infrequent service, multiple transfers and inconvenient route options. These factors keep transit from being a viable option for most residents.

For the time being, however, there is an opportunity to voice your concerns with the current state of affairs. TransLink is asking residents of South Delta, Tsawwassen and Richmond to outline their priorities for transportation in the region. I encourage everyone to share their thoughts at www.translink.ca/SWATP. The survey is open until May 6, and will help TransLink identify priorities for future planning. Paper surveys and collection boxes are located at Ladner Pioneer Library, Tsawwassen Library and Tsawwassen First Nation office.

We know that a lack of transit options can be particularly hard for seniors, and I was pleased to hear Delta council announce funding for a new seniors bus out of McKee Seniors' Recreation Centre.

I would also like to acknowledge the Delta Youth Legislative Advisory Council for their efforts to improve transit for seniors in our community. This group has dedicated many hours of their free time meeting with Delta seniors and reporting to officials on gaps in our transit network.

I am hopeful that transit in Delta will improve and I encourage everyone to provide input to help shape TransLink's regional plan.
