Brendan Gallagher will be jetting back and forth across the country this summer and he doesn't mind it one bit.

Two weeks after learning he had been invited to the National Junior Team Junior Team Development Camp in St. John's Newfoundland, the 18-year-old from Tsawwassen was selected in the fifth round of Saturday's NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadians.

That means the Vancouver Giants standout will be heading to Montreal on Friday to attend a three-day rookie camp. There should be another trip east for the Canadians main camp in September.

Gallagher enjoyed a breakthrough sophomore season in the Western Hockey League, racking up 81 points, including a team-leading 41 goals. The feisty 5-foot-8 winger also ranked third with 111 penalty minutes and delivered in the playoffs with 21 points in 16 games this spring.

Still, there was enough questions about his lack of size for the NHL Central Scouting Bureau to list him 174th among North American skaters in their final rankings. With European prospects also factored in, it meant there would be no certainty Gallagher would be drafted despite Rogers Sportsnet ranking him number one among their sleeper picks.

That's why the former South Delta Storm Bantam standout and his family took a low key approach to the weekend proceedings.

Gallagher watched the second day of draft coverage on the NHL Network with his mom and sister while his dad and brother were at a hockey tournament in Calgary. He had also promised to attend a birthday party of a young heart transplant survivor.

"It's a good thing I got drafted before round five because I wasn't going to be home for the final two rounds," he laughed. "I didn't have a lot of expectations going into it but of course I'm very excited now and what lies ahead."

The Canadiens and the Phoenix Coyotes were the two teams to show the most interest in him.

"The same scout who took me out for lunch was the first one to call and congratulate me," said Gallagher. "From a (Giants) perspective, I wished things would have gone a little better but, for me, I would have to say it was a pretty successful year."
