Delta Gymnastics will be well-represented at the 2018 Canadian Championships in Waterloo Ontario, starting on Thursday.

The four-day event brings together over 300 of the best national level and high-performance junior and senior gymnasts who will challenge for the title of national champion in men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. Athletes also have the opportunity to represent their province. Team B.C. qualifying was done through a series of trials held earlier this year.

“This is the most important gymnastics event in Canada,” says Mike Hood, Delta Gymnastics Men’s Competitive Program Coordinator, “All the best athletes from across Canada will be there and this event is significant in terms of facilitating the athlete’s possible selection to the national team and further to international teams.”

This year’s contingent of Delta athletes includes Ryan Woodhead (17), James (Xuan) Luo (27) and Cole Schallig (17).

“James is hoping to repeat his last year’s win as a national champion on rings,” explained Hood. “It will be Ryan’s first year in the senior level on the pommel horse and Cole will compete both on floor and pommel horse.  We are very excited to see how they perform.”

Also attending are four Delta Gymnastics staff members, including Hood as a Gymnastics Canada funded judge. Thornstein Fischer and Chris Sheremeta have been selected to judge by Team BC. While  Shu Jun Gao will attend as a Team B.C. coach to the men’s team.

“Attending as a judge at a national level event is an amazing experience for us as we have an opportunity to network with peers, get updated on the latest technical aspects of the sport and to see the up and coming talent in the country,” added Hood. “We are all very proud and honoured to be part of this team.”
