Delta Gymnastics Society coaches Chris Sheremeta, Thorstein Fischer and past member Devy Dyson are in Montreal this week for the 2017 FIG World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

This is a great achievement for these Delta residents who will be a part of one of the most anticipated and impressive gymnastics shows in the world.

Sheremeta  was invited by Gymnastics Canada to volunteer as an auxiliary judge. He is an International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Brevet Category III judge and has put in a considerable amount of time and energy to reach this level.

“Being a part of the electric atmosphere and supporting the official judges is very exciting. There are only two auxiliary judges chosen from each country and to be invited by Gymnastics Canada to be one of the two is quite an honor,” says Sheremeta.

This is the second time that Montreal has hosted the world championships in its 47-year history.

Sheremeta, Fischer and Dyson will have the unique opportunity to watch 500 gymnasts from 80 countries compete in front of tens of thousands of spectators.

Over the seven-day competition they will be able to see Olympic medalists in action, together for the first time since the Summer Games in Rio De Janeiro. The spokesperson for the event is legendary gymnast Nadia Comaneci, queen of the 1976 Olympic Games.

“This will be an incredible learning experience, speaking with judges about their career paths to become Category I and II certified. I am especially interested in the training preparation,” added Sheremeta. “This will be the first time these athletes will be in the same place using the same rules in this four-year cycle between the 2016 and 2020 Olympic games.”

Fischer earned his International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Brevet Judging Category III certification and traveled to Varna Bulgaria last month for the FIG International Apparatus World Challenge Cup. Dyson trained with Delta Gymnastics Society in 2012 and will be part of the New Zealand Team.
