The biggest single day in the history of athletics at South Delta secondary school is all set.
The South Delta Sun Devils senior girls volleyball and football teams are both in position to win provincial championships.
The girls have shown why they are the team to beat at the “AAAA” provincials in Port Coquitlam, having not dropped a set en route to Saturday morning’s semi-finals. The Sun Devils rolled through pool play with a 3-0 record then defeated Mt Baker (Cranbrook) and McMath (Richmond) on Friday to reach the final four.
South Delta is slated to face the host Riverside Rapids at 10:50 a.m.
The other semi-final is another all-Fraser Valley affair as Coquitam’s Charles Best takes on Port Moody’s Heritage Woods.
Charles Best upset No. 2 ranked Kelowna in its quarter-final game. Heritage Woods lost to South Delta in the Fraser Valley championship match two weeks ago.
The gold medal game is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Sun Devils football team will be at B.C. Place Stadium trying to cap off a perfect season when they take on the defending champions Mission Roadrunners in the “AA” final at 3 p.m.
The Sun Devils produced playoff wins over Rick Hansen and John Barsby to reach the championship game. The Roadrunners trimmed the Ballenas Whalers 28-27 in their semi-final final date to advance.
