Ben McDonald and the South Delta Sun Devils will be playing home games across the street at Dennison Park this season as construction on the renovated track at the SDSS oval has prevented regular maintenance of the field.

The South Delta Sun Devils are hoping lightning strikes twice when it comes to a little inconvenience for the coming high school football season.

With construction of the refurbished track at South Delta Secondary closing their regular home field for the entire month of August, the Sun Devils began two-day workouts across the street at Dennison Park.

It is also preventing regular field maintenance that typically includes volunteer parents repairing pot holes and watering areas by hand that required re-seeding at this time of year.

With the Sun Devils’ senior varsity team’s schedule featuring four of the first five games at home, they will all be played at Dennison.

The last time that happened was in 2014 and South Delta went on to win the provincial championship.

“We have received permission from the (South Delta) Rams (community football program) to play our first four games here and there is only one left after that. That has us thinking we might as well play our whole season here,” said head coach Ray Moon.

“The Rams have been really good about it and it’s about 95 percent it’s going to happen (for the entire season) as they already have it reserved for them.”

The Sun Devils head to Kelowna on Saturday for a joint practice that will conclude with some contact drills. They will do the same thing next Thursday against Eric Hamber in preparation for their non-conference season opener on Saturday, Sept. 7 when the Terry Fox Ravens visit Tsawwassen.

South Delta will have one of the most dynamic offences in the province — led by 2018 provincial all-star quarterback Ben McDonald.

“We think this is a top four team,” added Moon.
