Sixteen year-old Delta Deas junior rower Caitlin Lawrence recently qualified to compete in the Canadian National Rowing Championships at Burnaby Lake.

The championships are all about gauging yourself against the best rowers in the country.

The winner of the single sculls was 26-year old Olympian Carling Zeeman from Ontario, while Lawrence placed a respectable 37th out of 50.

“My focus is looking ahead to the coming winter season. I have improved so much but I know I need to get better,” she said.

The home of the Delta Deas Rowing Club is the boathouse in the Deas Island Regional Park.

The club is a member in good standing of Rowing Canada Aviron and competes in RCA-sanctioned events, as well as other events sponsored by high schools and rowing clubs in the Cascadia area. For more information contact [email protected].

In other rowing news, Ladner’s Aaron Lattimer was named male athlete of the year at the University of British Columbia.

That was on the strength of the Thunderbirds men’s rowing team winning its third national rowing championship in four years.

UBC recently earned a six-point triumph at Burnaby Lake over archrival Victoria.

Lattimer helped his team win the Lightweight 2x with his brother Maxwell and the Lightweight 4+. The Lattimers, Marcus van der Sande, Ivan Rybkin, and coxswain Kevin Chung comprised the victorious boat.
