There have been alarming declines in the honeybee population in different parts of the world. Many wild pollinators have also been suffering the same fate. While researchers are trying to determine the causes of these declines, the answer remains elusive.
The Delta Museum and Archives Society will introduce provincial apiculturist Paul Van Westendorp to provide some insight into the Plight of the Honey Bee at a special presentation next week.
Set for Thursday, May 19, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., the presentation will be held at the museum's annex, 4918 Delta St.
Cost is $5 per person; pre-registration is advised as seating is limited.
Van Westendorp will highlight the critical role insect pollinators play in our local environment, the dependency of modern agriculture on the abundance of insect pollinators, and the possible causes and solutions to stop pollinator declines.
A solution must be found as the burgeoning world population is more dependent than ever on bees to pollinate the numerous food crops.
The evening will also provide an opportunity to visit the Delta Museum's feature exhibit titled Life of a Delta Bee. Join Beatrice the Honeybee (her friends call her Bea) as she walks you through life as a bee in Delta and introduces you to herself, family, friends, enemies and her work around the community.
