Artist Violette Clark is presenting a free art journal jam for teens and tweens next Friday in Ladner.

The event is a chance to try art journaling, a combination of art and words, with others as well as share techniques and ideas. Clark, who lives in White Rock, says she's passionate about art journaling with teens because it can help them feel good about themselves.

"I've noticed all kinds of magical transformations when kids open up to art," she says.

Art journaling can be a way to write and draw what you're upset about but also a way to document your joys and what you love, she says.

Participants are encouraged to bring a journal book along with pens or pencil crayons. Clark says she will have other art supplies to try out as well.

Clark, who has been teaching art journaling for about 10 years, has also written a book on the topic, Journal Bliss: Creative Prompts to Unleash your Inner Eccentric. She's hoping to hold a monthly art journal jam in Ladner.

The art journal jam takes place Friday, Feb. 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Portal, 4755-51st St., Ladner.
