Road construction season is coming soon to northern B.C., and nearly 300 kilometres of highway and sideroad repaving projects are planned along Highways 16, 97, 37, 37A and 5 this summer.

The province is investing approximately $62 million to resurface northern B.C. highways and local roads, according to information released by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure on Tuesday.

"We know local residents and visitors in northern B.C. rely on highway infrastructure and local roads to travel around the region," B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said in a statement issued on Tuesday. "This year's resurfacing projects across northern B.C. will ensure safe and reliable roadways that connect people to industry, urban centres and support local businesses."

East of Prince George, resurfacing is planned for 40 km of Highway 16 from Dome Creek to the Lasalle Lake Recreation Site, 60 km of Highway 16 and sideroads around McBride and 54 km of Highway 5 between Whitewater Bridge and Albreda Pit Road.

West of Prince George, resurfacing is planned for 14 km of Highway 16 from Carmen Hill Road to the Vanderhoof Tourism and Culture Centre, three kilometres of Highway 16 east of Vanderhoof near Sunny Slope Road, 28 km of Highway 16 and sideroads in the Skeena area, 26 km of Highway 37 from Burrage Hill to Snapper Creek Bridge, and 47 km of Highway 37 and 37A from Bell Irving Bridge No. 1 to Bear Glacier.

North of Prince George, resurfacing is planned for 27 km of Highway 97 and Fort St. John side roads, in partnership with the City of Fort St. John.
