New website shows major highway closures in B.C.

The website was launched following the massive rain event B.C. experienced in mid-November.

With last week's storm causing major closures across a number of B.C. highways, the Ministry of Transportation has created a new website to show the current status of the impacted roads.

The Current Road Advisories and Information page shows updated info about Highways 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11, 19 and 99, on Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland and the Interior.

As of Sunday, Highway 7 between Mission and Hope, Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton, Highway 1 between Popkum and Hope, and Highway 99 from Pemberton to Lillooet have all been reopened for essential travel only.

A list of what's considered essential travel can also be found on the new website.

Closures remain on Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt, Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon and through Abbotsford and on Highway 8 between Merritt and Spences Bridge.

Last week, Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said even temporary repairs to the Coquihalla could take months to repair.
